The other was Grigori Kolokoltsov, a first lieutenant and close friend to Tolstoy’s brother-in-law. One was Alexander Stasyulevich, an ensign and old friend of Tolstoy from his time in the army. The men were junior officers from the 65th Moscow Infantry Regiment, temporarily stationed nearby. During that midpoint of his work, Tolstoy’s masterpiece was briefly distracted by two men who visited his family estate and asked for his assistance. Its completion would come three years later, near Tolstoy’s fortieth birthday.
